Hu's formative years were spent in Shanghai, where she received musical training in Italian opera. She later moved to San Francisco where she was exposed to R&B and Jazz stylings, and studied under jazz singer Faith Winthrop. Her first release in 1994 was a jazz album, sung in her native Mandarin and produced by Tats Lau. In 1996, she signed with Musician Ltd, a short-lived sublabel of Polygram Hong Kong, and in the following years released music noted for an alternative flare. Her second album (就係...) was released to lukewarm reception in 1997. She drew frequent comparisons to Faye Wong, an influence which she has personally acknowledged.[1][2] She went on hiatus in the years following the release of that album, and has since shifted her attention mainly on being a TV personality.
Hu managed to release one easy-listening Mandarin album with little success in 2002, before becoming a regular TV host for music programmes on TVB. In late 2007, she made a return to the Hong Kong music with the EP Don't Think Just Do.
Throughout her career, Hu has collaborated and recorded with Tats Lau, Jan Lamb, and Anthony Wong Yiu Ming in the mid-90s, and Edison Chen in 2005.
As of 2008, she is married to Pal Sinn, former member of 80s Hong Kong rock band Blue Jeans and a frequent songwriter on her albums.
